	My concern arises from the kind of application I see arising in the
next ten years and giving rise to the increased demand for computers that
IBM would like to see.  These applications are characterized by

	1. They are very large and elaborate and no one of them satisfies
much of the user's needs.  Therefore, to repay the effort of writing it
such a program needs a large market and a long life.  It must be movable
from system to system without the help of rewriting and it must survive
system upgrading without rewriting.

	2. They are highly interactive: with users at consoles, with
files, and with computer systems belonging to other organizations.

	My own awareness of the need for this kind of program comes from
considering home computer terminals, but the problems exist in the commercial
area too.  Here are some of the home terminal applications and some of the
problems they present:
